During my one-month lifeguard training I had to do exactly the same things as the men in my training. For this reason a lot of Taiwanese girls don’t even make it to the training. In general the girls in Taiwan are very petit. Physically the training is too heavy for them. Luckily by Taiwanese standards I am considered tall.
I wasn’t allowed to use my period as an excuse to not do certain exercises, so I gained fortitude. Men never have that kind of experience, to keep on going while they are on their period. That’s why, to me, being a woman is defined by mental strength, and tolerance. We learn to endure more, because we give birth as well, for example.
